In 2024 the Central Bank rate for 22 carat gold moved between Rs 147,145 (15 February 2024) and Rs 192,372 (30 October 2024) per pawn. It ended the year at Rs 180,002 on 31 December 2024.

From the last rate of 2023 to 31 December 2024, the price of gold in rupees rose by 13.9%.

Over 242 business days the average Central Bank rate was Rs 169,747 per pawn of 22 carat gold, or Rs 23,147 per gram of 24 carat gold.

By the closing rate of each month, February was the lowest at Rs 148,919 and October the highest at Rs 192,372 per pawn of 22 carat gold.

At the end of 2024 a pawn of 22 carat gold was worth Rs 180,002. On Friday 6 November 2026 it is Rs 319,126, up 77%.

Where the numbers come from
How the price is worked out
  1. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka takes the world price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars at the start of each business day.
  2. It converts it to rupees at its indicative US dollar exchange rate and publishes the result.
  3. We divide by 31.1035 for the price of one gram of pure (24 carat) gold.
  4. Other carats are worked out by purity: 22 carat is 22/24 of the 24 carat price.
  5. Other currencies use the Central Bank exchange rate of the same day.
